I am exhibiting my work just a few blocks from The American Thread Building where I lived for 5 years (above). It's nice to be back in the old neighborhood. The Lotus Salon is at 34 N. Moore and is open 7 days a week from 10am until 8pm. There's more details on the sidebar to the right.

The first thing you will see when you enter is one of the installation pieces. It includes a number of plaster and pigment sculptures on a wood shelf. Above that there's an arrow embedded in the wall and a stream of pigment trailing down as if it has pierced a vain of yellow ochre. The text panel explains the idea behind the arrow. See below.

2011 proved to be an incredible year for Dwayne Butcher. He did not get anyone pregnant nor did he die, fabulous news! He moved into a new studio, lost 20 pounds and won 117 bucks at the dog track one day, super-fabulous news!

2012 will prove to be just as spectacular as he prepares for exhibitions that will put Memphis at the forefront of the international contemporary art scene. He hopes the Mayans are correct about the end of the world as he has a tremendous amount of student loans yet to pay. He does not really believe the world will come an end in 2012.

Attached is a piece from his upcoming exhibition The Politics of Inclusion opening at David Lusk Gallery in March. Be on the lookout for more outrageously fabulous news about and from Dwayne Butcher in the coming year.

I had the pleasure of meeting Satoshi Fujinuma, a fellow resident artist from the International Turning Exchange, for lunch last week. He was working with Albert and Tina LeCoff, staff and the carpenters union, putting the final touches on the impressive new museum style space in Old City, Philadelphia.

The Center for Art and Wood is now open to the public and I recommend you visit when you're in the area. In addition to their new name, they were previously known as The Wood Turning Center, they have a new website that covers their mission, exhibitions and collection.

Occupy Oakland Strike Draws 100,000; Violence Caused By 100

What was so amazing about the size of the crowd both inside the plaza and just outside of it, then marching to the Port of Oakland, was that it did not decrease in size; it increased. And that was with some people leaving it, and others coming in from BART and from around Oakland via foot or other parts of the Bay by car.

For that to happen all day long and considering the capacity of the plaza and the crowds outside of it points to 100,000 people. I’ve never seen anything like that in the entire history of this city.

The bottom line is all of this Occupy Oakland General Strike business has been misreported. The count is 100,000, not 7,000. And the night of activities should not be seen as marring a successful day of parties and festivities.

SpaceCamp MicroGallery; through Oct. 30.

In this show, Philadelphia-based artist Vincent Romaniello takes small things that we see each day, like potato chip bags and drinking straws, and makes outsized 3D replicas inspired by them. But pay just as much attention to the 2D works on display here.

Another blow-up painting, this time inspired by commercial art found on packaging material, is painted with the logo "Sunny." You also see, in this acrylic on paper work sheathed in clear plastic, wholesome portraits of a smiling mom with her son holding a beach ball. (Romaniello's a damn-good portrait artist, by the way.) But this happy beach scene is undercut by the plethora of extra symbols — x's, o's, and triangles that suggest dire warnings.

Occupy Wall Street Demands Attention With ‘No Comment Art’

While it can be hard to pinpoint what exactly the demands of Occupy Wall Street are, one thing is certain, people are taking notice.

What started as a small movement in Zuccotti Park has expanded into a nationwide phenomenon - and like all major historical protests, artists have joined forces with the political activists to highlight the cause with protest art.

The space is nothing like you would imagine standing across the street at the New York Stock Exchange, but that's what drew Creative Director and Organizer Marika Maiorova to the building.

In one corner there was a two-story wall smothered in the oft-mocked Occupy Wall Street posters. In another, Daniel De Paola hung from the ceiling, cocooned in an American flag for his performance installation "For Your Entertainment."

In another corner was Vincent Romaniello's extra-large "Pink Slip" sculpture.

"When it comes right down to it, it's about jobs, jobs, jobs!" Romaniello said while standing beside his art. "Once you loose your job it all escalates from there."

"Before, we still had problems, but at least we had jobs," he added.

Romaniello likes to take things like litter that you might miss in your everyday life and blow them up. Like the movement itself, he does this to wake people up and make them more aware.

He calls it "Aware Mess."

One could say that's a fitting term for the movement as a whole.

"Cart" at Current Space continues through October, 2011. Read about the exhibition in The Baltimore Sun and Baltimore City Paper.

An excerpt from The Baltimore Sun:

"The concept behind the CART exhibit, which runs through Sept. 4, is as clever as the execution. Organizers took as their cue government statistics showing that the typical American shops for groceries roughly twice a week. In a statement summarizing the show, Current Space co-director Monique Crabbe writes:

Art "remains extraordinarily undervalued by mainstream American society, which is almost solely focused on the seemingly endless cycle of labor and consumption … Current Gallery is positing that art is not optional, but essential ... and it should therefore be considered as fundamental to our daily lives as the products we purchase at grocery stores every week."

Commonly seen objects come in for novel treatment here. The Christmas tree-shaped air freshener that dangles from many a rear-view mirror, for example, is transformed by Pennsylvania artist Vincent Romaniello into a huge, suspended sculpture titled "Bull Deodorizer." It looks like something Andy Warhol might have thought of during his soup can phase."

Arvo Pärt and Snøhetta collaborate for Guggenheim

"For the second edition of stillspotting nyc, composer Arvo Pärt and the architects at Snøhetta collaborate on a series of stillspots around Lower Manhattan that explore the special relationship between space and sound. Pärt’s concept of tintinnabuli (“little bells” in Latin), which forms the basis of most of his work, was born from a deeply rooted desire for an extremely reduced realm of sound that could not be measured, as it were, in kilometers or even meters but only in millimeters."

Tours for To a Great City run from Thursdays to Sundays, September 15–18 and 22–25, 2011. Hours of operation are 11:00 am–7:00 pm, with the last ticket pick-up at 4pm.

CrazyTime Tea Crash

Just like everyone else in the world, I've been following this debt crisis debate for the past few weeks.

The composite image above came from combining two separate ideas I was working on. I wanted to do a huge tea bag for a while and was researching the paper they use to make the real thing. The image of a ceiling that has crashed down is pretty obvious, but is still powerful.

I would like to find a gallery or alternative space that would be interested in showing this work. It could even be a performance piece where I would paint and drop the ceiling live. The crashing sound and associated mess would be pretty dramatic.

Old City Gallery Who Lost Everything to a Landfill Puts Down New Roots in Port Richmond, Exhibiting Out of the Ash: New Work by Theresa Pfarr

Landfill over Art? How about a gallery’s 15 year collection? Paintings, drawings sculptures, video and sound art, as well as documentation of seminal conceptual and installation based pieces from the 90’s? That’s exactly what happened to longtime Old City gallery Carbon14 when they crossed paths with an Old City Developer in 2008, and a long civil suit ensued.
Shockingly, the gallery did not come out on the top of the suit, as little value was given to their art collection and contents of their personal art studios.

Precedents for conceptual, installation and video arts worth in a tort action haven’t been established in this kind of case before, which brings up complex questions of intellectual property, and the consequences of its destruction.

“It was very shocking to see the Philadelphia Civil Court system so geared towards the Big Guy,“ says artist and co-founder of carbon14, Andrew Warner. “Whoever has the deepest pockets wins, that’s basically justice. I really had this idealistic view of justice coming into it. I mean, I had the guy on video, destroying artwork. In the end it didn’t matter.” says Warner.

Charlie Finch on Street Art

I doubt I would have found the artists Faith47 and her husband Dal if Charlie Finch hadn't written his excellent piece called "The Savage Street". There are a number of good pictures on artnet but I wanted to dig around and found their websites with more images. The work here is from Faith47 and was likely shot in South Africa where she's from. Finch has been an advocate for artists of all stripes but has a special passion for street art as is evident from an earlier article "Graffiti: The Noblest Art". He laments that the big graffiti show "Art in the Streets" at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, that was suppose to travel to the Brooklyn Museum was cancelled. There was talk of finding another venue and I hope that's what ends up happening.

Eva Lake is a hardworking artist known firstly for her fantastic paintings and photomontage work. You can catch her in New York at frosch&portmann through August 21, and in Portland, OR at Augen Gallery August 4-27.

For the past 10 years she has produced the radio program "Art Focus" on KBOO. You can get information on the next broadcast with Lisa Radon on her world renowned blog Eva Lake.
