New Work: Name Tags

Hoping for peace this New Year. Each of these "Name Tags" are 3x4 ft., paint, paper and glassine, 2010. To see other work from this series visit my web site.

Danny Licul

I watched my studio mate at chashama, Danny Licul, work on this large painting. Great to see it finished and up on his web page.

New York Christmas Spirit

I was in NY for some business and fun and spent the day on the Lower East Side. One of my first stops was frosch&portmann who had a holiday specific theme, Santa. There were naughty Santas, and funny Santas, and more Santas that you can read about on their site. One of the artists in the show is Judith Braun, Happy Birthday Judith! David, who was working the desk, told me I had to see the exhibit/benefit show at Lehmann Maupin and I'm glad he did.

The benefit is organized by the Foundation for Contemporary Arts (FCA), a non-profit arts organization founded by Jasper Johns and John Cage that supports art causes. Visit the site to get all the details. When I walked in and asked for the exhibition list I wasn't ready for such a large document. There are in the neighborhood of 200 artists, many of the top names in the contemporary art world, as you can see from the photographs. It was fun to try and guess who was who, using the print out as a confirmation. You can do the same and get your answers on the Lehmann Maupin website.

I did see a few other shows including Michael DeLucia at 11 Rivington, above, and a couple of shows at Dodge Gallery, below.

Merry Christmas and a Happy 2011 to you all!

FRACKING: Art and Activism Against the Drill

Exit Art is hosting an exhibition that responds to the problem of fracking. "Hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”) is a means of gas extraction that accesses gas trapped more than a mile below the earth’s surface." This is an especially serious issue here in Pennsylvania, a state that has vast reserves of natural gas.

RSVP for the public event on January 12 that brings together leading experts and activists on hydraulic fracturing.

Work In Progress

I still have a couple more steps to take with this piece but it's coming along. My plan is to add three important names, names that will have meaning as a group on an issue that is relevant today. Have any suggestions? I'm also going to add waxy paper to these and in the end it will be one long (9 ft.) roll of name tags, I think.

The Silo

This is award season it seems and the people at the Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts recently awarded their prizes for writing. Included in the blogger category is Raphael Rubinstein, and The Silo. I can't say I consider his site a blog but I like his writing and that's enough for me. The image is from artist Alberto Gironella, one of Mr. Rubinstein's subjects.

Aqua Miami Installation

Hudson Houston, a great blog from Saatchi & Saatchi, had this to say about my work at Aqua. "At Aqua, I was taken by Vincent Romaniello’s sculptures of ephemera which, by drastically increasing the scale, re-frame mundane paper objects, and invite us to consider form in places where we normally wouldn’t. Reconsidering the definition of what we think of as art is always a useful exercise." Visit them for more on the fair and other art related topics, it's a great site.

The image above is from Artslant and shows all three of my pieces, "Big Spill" (the large painting), "Last Straw" (the piece leaning next to the painting) and a different angle of "Pink Slip". The folks at Artslant covered a number of venues in Miami follow this link to read all about it.

Joanne Mattera does her usual, extraordinary job of covering the Miami fairs. This year I get a mention for my "Pink Slip" piece. "The message is writ large on this floor piece, a sign of the times, in a show curated by Trong Gia Nguyen, late of Bravo's Work of Art."

Hyperallergic.com also posted a lot of images from the various locations at Art Miami including mine and other work from Artslant at Aqua, so check it out.

I also want to acknowledge chashama. All of my work that was shown at Aqua was made during my studio residency there.

Thank you all.http://www.chashama.org/

Memphis Trip

Paul Behnke captured this truck nuts sighting on camera while driving through Tennessee on December 5, 2010. If you are unfamiliar with the truck nuts phenomenon you can find out more by watching this excellent video from the Squidbillies.

Below are a few images from the Curious Environ exhibition at the University of Memphis Art Museum that we went down to install. More pictures will follow once I recover from the trip.
